Carry-on baggage
Allowed
Dry mushrooms can go in your cabin bag under TSA solid-food rules. Keep the package accessible in case an officer asks to inspect it.
Checked baggage
Allowed
Dry mushrooms can go in your checked bag. A rigid container helps protect brittle pieces from being crushed.
A bag of mushrooms for dinner
Whether you bought a packet of dried mushrooms or received a home-dried batch as a gift, start by checking what is inside. This page covers edible mushrooms dried for cooking. A soup or a jar with liquid needs a separate liquids check.
Bringing dried mushrooms into the United States
USDA APHIS allows dried mushrooms into the United States when they are free of soil, insects, disease and contamination from other plant material. Its guidance for edible mushrooms also excludes wood and wood chips. Mushroom spawn for growing follows separate requirements.
Declare agricultural products to US Customs and Border Protection, including the mushrooms in your suitcase. Inspectors decide whether they can enter. Keep original packaging and receipts as evidence of the country of origin, when available.
Flying somewhere else?
The baggage answers on this page cover US security screening. For a flight departing elsewhere, check the departure airport's rules. Before crossing a border, check the destination's food-import requirements, even if the mushrooms will stay in checked baggage.
BEFORE LEAVING HOME
Pack them for the journey
- Close the pouch or jar securely. Keep the product label or receipt if you have one; label the contents of a homemade batch clearly.
- Place fragile slices in a rigid food container. Cushion a glass jar among soft items.
- Check the destination's import requirements and declare the mushrooms when required.
SHORT ANSWER
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring home-dried mushrooms?
TSA solid-food guidance does not require an unopened retail packet. Seal and label a homemade batch, then check the destination's import rules.
Do dried mushrooms belong in the liquids bag?
Plain dry pieces can stay with your food. Mushrooms in soup, sauce or brine need a separate check under carry-on liquid rules.
