MARINE PYROTECHNIC SIGNAL

Can you bring red marine distress aerial flare on a plane?

Leave a red marine distress aerial flare out of both bags. Under the United States FAA rules covered here, pyrotechnic signal flares cannot travel in carry-on or checked baggage. Arrange the flare supply at your boating destination before flying.

Carry-on baggage

Prohibited

The FAA prohibits pyrotechnic signal flares in carry-on baggage.

Checked baggage

Prohibited

The same prohibition applies to checked baggage; protective packaging does not create an exception.

Item identification card: Red marine distress aerial flare
A marine distress flare is a pyrotechnic signal device, not an ordinary flashlight; check the specific dangerous-goods prohibition.

CHECK THE SIGNAL TYPE

Which part of the marine kit are you carrying?

A sailing bag may contain a flare pack alongside a life jacket or an ordinary torch. Check the product labels before copying the boat's safety kit into your flight luggage. This page covers pyrotechnic marine aerial flares under US departure rules. The English language of the page does not extend that scope to every airport.

Self-contained aerial signal

A flare with its own launch mechanism still contains a pyrotechnic signal. Leave the complete item behind. A waterproof body or factory seal is not permission to fly with it.

Flare cartridge and launcher set

The pyrotechnic cartridge remains prohibited when packed separately. Check the launcher as a separate item before considering transport; the ordinary firearm-ammunition allowance must not be applied to signal flares.

Handheld flare or smoke signal

Inspect these when checking a mixed marine pack. Replacing the aerial signal with another pyrotechnic signal does not make the kit suitable for passenger baggage.

Electronic light or distress signal

A light that uses batteries needs a separate assessment of the device and its batteries. Confirm its suitability for your boating plans with the operator; do not assume it replaces required marine equipment.

Orion's marine FAQ distinguishes aerial and handheld signals and describes aerial products that use separate launchers. Use the manufacturer's description to identify yours without opening or altering the flare.

Arrange the sailing equipment before the flight

  1. Check every marine equipment bag against its contents list. Include spare flare packs and signals left in side pockets after an earlier sailing trip.
  2. Ask the charter company or boat owner what signals it supplies. Confirm who will arrange any missing equipment locally before you leave home.
  3. If you need your own supply, contact a marine supplier at the destination. Confirm availability and collection arrangements before relying on them for the trip.
  4. If separate transport is necessary, ask a suitable dangerous-goods carrier about the exact product and route. A retailer's delivery option is not evidence that passenger baggage is allowed.

Do this before airport check-in. Moving a flare from a backpack into a suitcase does not change the transport decision.

Two common sailing trips

  • Flying to join a charter boat

Send the skipper your equipment list before packing. Ask which distress signals are already aboard and which you are expected to supply. Pack your other belongings according to their own rules, with the flare supply arranged at the destination.

  • Bringing equipment home after a delivery voyage

Check the sailing bag again before your return flight. Do not assume a signal bought abroad can come home in your luggage. Discuss local storage, supplier collection or disposal with the owner or manufacturer before leaving the marina.

Life-jacket gas cartridges have a separate rule

The FAA outdoor-equipment guidance allows a limited exception for wearable self-inflating safety devices using Division 2.2 nonflammable, nonpoisonous gas. It requires airline approval, no more than two devices, no more than two small inflation cartridges fitted per device and no more than two spare cartridges per device. The device must be packaged to prevent accidental activation.

Those conditions concern inflation gas. A red flare cartridge contains a different kind of material and cannot use that exception.

Version covered

A marine distress flare is a pyrotechnic signal device, not an ordinary flashlight; check the specific dangerous-goods prohibition. This answer covers the ordinary form of the item at a US checkpoint. A separate liquid, battery, blade or chemical in the kit may have its own rule.

Carry-on baggage

No. “Red marine distress aerial flare” is a pyrotechnic signal flare and is forbidden in carry-on.

Checked baggage

No. “Red marine distress aerial flare” is also forbidden in checked baggage under FAA dangerous-goods rules.

Prepare for screening

  • Identify the exact mechanism and any battery, chemical, blade or pyrotechnic component before packing.
  • Inspect the kit and its packaging.
  • Compare the result with airline and route conditions.

SHORT ANSWER

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a red aerial distress flare in my checked suitcase?

No. For the United States scope covered here, the FAA prohibits signal flares in both carry-on and checked baggage. Buying a checked-bag allowance does not create a transport option for your flare.

Does Coast Guard approval make it acceptable on the flight?

Approval for marine signaling does not grant permission to carry pyrotechnics in airline baggage. Arrange the boat's required safety equipment with its operator at the destination before your trip.

What if the flare is expired or still in a sealed pack?

Neither description creates a passenger-baggage exception in the FAA flare entry. Leave it out of your luggage. For an expired item, ask the manufacturer or a local fire protection agency about appropriate disposal arrangements before travel.

Can I bring a handheld flare instead of an aerial one?

Changing the form of a pyrotechnic distress signal does not solve the baggage restriction. The FAA entry covers signal flares and similar flammable or explosive products. A battery-powered signal needs its own device and battery check.

Are inflatable life-jacket cartridges treated like flare cartridges?

They have a separate FAA exception for qualifying wearable devices using nonflammable, nonpoisonous gas. Airline approval and quantity limits apply. That exception does not cover pyrotechnic flares, even when both items belong to the same marine safety kit.

Can I use a parcel service for the flare?

Do not assume an ordinary parcel booking is suitable. Ask the supplier or a carrier that handles regulated dangerous goods whether it can lawfully arrange transport for the exact product and route. Confirm the arrangement before relying on delivery.
