Life vests and parachutes on a plane
At US checkpoints, a self-inflating life vest and a parachute can travel in carry-on or checked baggage under different conditions. Identify the gas cartridges or automatic activation device before packing, and confirm the airline will accept the full kit.
Life vests with gas cartridges
TSA allows a life vest with up to two installed CO₂ cartridges and two spares in either bag. FAA requires airline approval for the self-inflating device and limits each passenger to two devices, with at most two installed and two spare cartridges per device. Pack the vest so it cannot inflate accidentally. A loose cartridge without the vest needs its own assessment; the vest entry does not cover it. FAA: self-inflating safety devices.
Parachutes and AADs
TSA permits a parachute with or without an automatic activation device in carry-on or checked baggage at US checkpoints. Pack the rig separately. If officers need to open it, you must be present to assist with inspection; TSA is not responsible for repacking it. Check the rig after arrival before use, and confirm its packed size with the airline. TSA: parachutes.
