Flying with a bicycle: from booking to the first ride

Book bicycle transport, check the dimensions of the complete package, and use those measurements to decide how much of the bike to dismantle. A 23 kg or 32 kg checked baggage allowance does not guarantee that the airline will accept it. This guide covers packing, batteries, CO2 cartridges, connections and collection, including point-to-point trips that return from another airport.

Who is this for? For cyclists travelling for training, competitions, or expeditions

Can I bring a bicycle on a plane and what exactly am I booking?

A standard bicycle is most often transported as checked sporting equipment. Check with the carrier if they accept such equipment, if they have space for it on a specific flight, and how they charge for it. Adding a checked suitcase to the ticket may not be enough, as the bicycle must be reported separately. If there are several passengers, assign the service to the appropriate person. Check for the return journey separately.

In the submission, state whether it is a bicycle without a motor, or an e-bike, as well as the number of packages, their actual external dimensions, and weight. Save the confirmation in your phone, so it is available offline. If you are buying a ticket through an intermediary, establish who adds the equipment to the booking. If the ticket shows the number of one line, but a different carrier operates the flight, check the operator for each segment and make sure they accept bicycles.

Lufthansa advises waiting until the equipment is confirmed in the booking. Sending a declaration form does not close the matter. The bicycle might fit within the available baggage allowance, with exceptions depending on the fare, but it still requires reporting. Lufthansa: registration and charging for sporting equipment.

The cost of transporting a bicycle depends on the line, route, and method of purchasing the service. When comparing flights, calculate the transfer in both directions, the possible surcharge for weight, and the rental of a package that can fit the carton. After calculating these costs, a cheap fare may cost the same as a more convenient connection.

LOT, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Lufthansa: limits and packing

Rules checked on 26 September 2026; please confirm specific flight
AirlineWeight and dimensionsPacking and booking
LOTUp to 32 kg; standardly total 230 cm, listed 130 × 30 × 70 cmBicycle is subject to a fee regardless of the standard limit; larger items should be arranged with the Contact Center. LOT rules
RyanairBicycle up to 30 kgProtective cardboard box or bike bag; separate sports service. Ryanair rules
Wizz AirUp to 32 kg; max 149 × 119 × 171 cmOne unit/set for a fee; add when booking, no later than 3 hours before departure. Wizz Air rules
LufthansaUp to 32 kg; sum of dimensions up to 280 cmProtective packaging; form required 72 hours before flight, later the service centre up to 24 hours. Lufthansa registration

Wizz Air describes two ways of packing. The first is a bike case with the wheels and pedals removed and the handlebars set parallel, the second is a box and tyres deflated. The number of spaces for sports equipment is limited. The three-hour deadline sets the service boundary, so start planning earlier.

LOT requires the handlebar to be secured in a turned position or separated. The pedals must be removed or turned inwards. The airline also advises partially deflating the tyres. A cardboard box, stretch wrap, and a case are accepted, although the wrap itself does not protect delicate parts. LOT: preparing the bike.

Maximum limit vs. included limit

The 32 kg limit in the description of the equipment may be higher than the weight included in your ticket price. Check the fee and confirmed weight for the purchased service. Ryanair's dedicated page on bikes does not provide a separate, universal dimension limit, so do not apply the dimensions of other airlines.

Bike box or travel case? Examples from EVOC, Thule and Scicon

A hard case makes sense if you are starting a trip in one city and ending in another. Arrange in advance where you will collect a suitable case upon return, protective materials, and time for packing. A reusable bag makes travelling through a terminal easier, but after unpacking, you must store it or transport it to your final accommodation. A hard construction also requires the bike to be secured correctly inside.

Verified examples based on manufacturer data, no guarantee of airline acceptance
ModelVersion specificationsWhat to check on your bike
EVOC BIKE BAG PRO9.6 kg; 147 x 85 x 36 cm; wheel separation up to 130 cm. EVOCLong MTB, 29-inch wheels, wheel separation and adapters; manufacturer states suitability for most indicated bike types.
Thule RoundTrip Road 320517812.5 kg; 124 x 33 x 85 cm; wheel separation up to 110 cm. ThuleRoad, gravel or touring bike; do not confuse with a dedicated MTB version or dimensions for a bag stored for luggage.
Scicon AeroComfort 3.0 Road TP0531050139.5 kg; manufacturer states 115 x 28 x 95 cm. SciconRoad version for road/gravel; the construction allows the handlebar, saddle, and seatpost to remain attached, but the airline may require disassembly.

The sum of the EVOC dimensions is 268 cm, and the Thule Road is 242 cm. In both cases, this exceeds the 230 cm standard published by LOT. These calculations are based on manufacturer data. Before purchasing or hiring a bag, therefore, agree upon larger dimensions with the airline, even if the product is described as suitable for air travel.

Measure the bag once the bike is packed, including bulges and any protruding elements. Also, ensure it can fit through a car door, into a transfer boot, and into the lift at your accommodation. An empty bag can use up a significant portion of the limit: a bag weighing 12.5 kg and an example bike weighing 9 kg total 21.5 kg, not including tools and protective materials.

How to pack a road bike, gravel, and MTB without putting pressure on delicate parts?

A few days before the trip, test the bike. Write down the saddle height, handlebar setting, and padding position, and take photos before dismantling. Use the instructions for the frame, cockpit, and bag. If you are not experienced with a carbon stem or internal cable routing, have a workshop prepare it and ask them to show you how to reassemble it.

Place the removed pedals in a sealed bag; label the wheel axles and small parts. The frame should not rest against a metal cassette, disc, or a loose spanner. Cover contact points with soft padding, and secure everything according to the packing instructions. Clothing can fill empty spaces if the line allows for such contents, but it will not replace struts and secure mounting.

A side impact can easily damage the rear derailleur or its hanger. Decide whether to remove it by consulting the manufacturer's instructions and considering whether you can reinstall it correctly. Leave other drivetrain parts alone unless you know they need to come off. On a gravel bike, allow room for the wide handlebars, racks and bottle cages. With an MTB, a long wheelbase and wide tyres often determine whether it fits more than the nominal frame size does.

Do not press the carbon with heavy equipment. Upon arrival, mount the cockpit and seatpost using the appropriate tool, with the torque specified in the element's manual. The value varies depending on the bike. Check the correct assembly in a calm spot before heading out.

Travelling with tubeless tyres and disc brakes

Requirements for deflating air vary between lines and packaging types. Check the specific writing for your variant. In a tubeless system, if the seal is lost, sealant may leak out, and the tyre will need to be reseated. Before reducing pressure at home, establish where you will find the appropriate pump or service assistance upon arrival.

The recommendation regarding tyres does not automatically apply to the shock absorber and damper. You can find the method for preparing these components for transport in the bike or suspension manual. A spare bottle of sealant is subject to chemical and liquid transport regulations, even if the same product is usually found inside the tyre.

After removing the wheel, use the appropriate shim between the brake pads. SRAM indicates that such shims help keep the pads in place when removing wheels and are adapted to the caliper. Do not press in any random piece of dirty plastic. SRAM: using pad spacers.

Protect the rotors from lateral pressure and contact with grease. Their potential removal requires the correct tools and proper reinstallation upon arrival. If they remain on the wheels, check the orientation of the wheels in the bag pockets. Before setting off, spin the wheels, check the braking, and ensure the axle is correctly mounted.

Can an electric bike be transported after removing the battery?

Removing the battery does not automatically change the e-bike into a standard, permissible bicycle. Lufthansa prohibits the transport of personal electric vehicles even without an installed battery, regardless of its capacity or detachable status. Lufthansa: electric vehicles.

Ryanair does not carry e-bikes. LOT also lists them as not allowed sports equipment, and Wizz Air prohibits small electric vehicles, including e-bikes, regardless of battery size. Do not interpret public records without an explicit exception as permission for a frame with a motor and a removed battery. Ryanair, LOT, Wizz Air.

Renting an e-bike on site might simplify travel, as you do not need to transport the vehicle or search for a compatible electric bicycle battery. If you are considering specialist transport, check the cargo rules and the off-site collection method. A large traction battery does not become a power bank simply by changing the name on the packaging. For the carrier, its intended use and parameters matter.

Bicycle with electronic gear changes

A small battery for a derailleur or display unit is not for assisting riding. Assess such batteries separately according to the manufacturer's instructions and the airline's rules. A bicycle equipped with electronics is not always an e-bike.

Pump, CO2, multi-tool, grease, and sealant: what to separate?

According to Poland's Civil Aviation Authority (ULC), CO2 cartridges for inflating tyres may be permitted when they contain a Division 2.2 gas with no subsidiary hazard. You need the operator's approval, and the limit is four cartridges per person, each with a water capacity of no more than 50 ml. The figure refers to water capacity, not 50 g of gas. Confirm the exception with the airline. ULC: gases and bike cartridges. In the USA, an additional screening rule applies: the FAA says TSA regulations prohibit full cartridges in this category. FAA: compressed gas and TSA screening.

When travelling with several carriers, bringing a bike pump and buying CO2 on site means fewer formalities. Check the rules again before returning, because cartridges bought before a competition are still subject to restrictions on the plane. Do not empty or modify containers at the airport.

The EU's 6 cm threshold applies to certain tool parts, but it is not blanket permission for every small multi-tool. European Commission list. Check maintenance products by their ingredients and safety data sheet. LOT refers passengers to its dangerous-goods rules, while the FAA lists WD-40 as a prohibited flammable aerosol. LOT: chemicals in baggage, FAA: aerosols. A flammable product remains restricted even when its container meets the size limit for liquid toiletries.

Garmin, Wahoo, lights and power banks: a small bag for the cabin

Remove the GPS bike computer and detachable lights from the handlebars so they cannot be lost during handling or crushed. According to its manual, the Garmin Edge 1050 has a built-in lithium-ion battery. The Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT 3 is another GPS bike computer whose settings and routes can be prepared before departure. These examples illustrate the type of electronics you may carry; airline approval still depends on the device and battery rules. Garmin: battery specification, Wahoo: ELEMNT BOLT 3.

Carry the power bank and any removable spare lithium batteries in the cabin after checking the limits and protecting their terminals. A bike computer with its battery installed counts as a device, so rules for spare batteries may not apply to it in the same way. Keep valuable electronics with you when the devices and batteries meet the carrier's requirements.

Ryanair permits power banks up to 100 Wh, a maximum of two units within the allowance for spare batteries; they must be with the passenger or in the bag under the seat, not in the overhead locker. Ryanair: batteries and power banks. Do not apply these figures to every airline. When ground staff take the cabin baggage to the hold, remove the power bank and spare batteries.

Download maps and routes for offline use, check the charging cable, and keep a copy of the route on your phone. List the electronic-shifting battery, tracker, camera and heart-rate sensor separately. Whatever the box says on the outside, each device still needs protection against accidental activation.

Helmet, shoes, and clothes: outfit for the first day

Pack your helmet where heavier parts cannot crush it. If it fits within your cabin-baggage allowance, keep it with you along with your glasses and shoes. A helmet clipped to the outside of a backpack may count towards the bag's dimensions rather than as an extra free item. Check the size of the complete bag before going to the gate.

Keep your shoes separate from the frame and delicate fabrics. Clean the MTB treads of dirt and dry wet protectors. For the first ride, choose clothes based on the forecast and the character of the route: prepare a T-shirt, shorts, socks, gloves, and a layer for rain. A waterproof jacket will not protect the brake disc from impact.

When travelling to a race, items that are specifically suited to you are particularly valuable: tested shoes, helmet, and kit. Carrying them in the cabin makes it easier to use a spare bike if yours is delayed. Plan pedals and their mounting keys according to the tool regulations; do not add them to the same carry-on bag without checking.

Empty your water bottles before the check-in. Check gels, anti-chafing cream, and sunscreen according to the liquid rules in force at each airport, as limits for departing and returning may differ. Food and supplements are also subject to customs regulations, described in the guide on supplements.

Drop-off, connections and collection: keep track of your bicycle

Arrive early, according to the drop-off times provided by the airline. Usually, first you complete the formalities at the check-in desk, and then you hand over the large luggage in the designated area. Online check-in usually does not allow you to skip the equipment drop-off. Remove old tags, and include contact details inside the packaging as well.

At check-in, ask whether the bicycle is tagged to your final airport and read the destination code on the tag. With separate tickets, you may need to collect it, complete entry formalities and check it in again. Allow time to wait for oversized baggage and reach the next desk before it closes, especially when changing terminals. A change of aircraft may also require the airline to confirm space for the bicycle again.

Upon arrival, find the oversized luggage collection point. Inspect the packaging, take photos of any damage, and check visible parts of the bicycle before leaving. In case of damage, report it to baggage services, keep the confirmation and case number. Lufthansa indicates that damage must be reported immediately and no later than seven days after collection of the baggage; keep the timelines and procedure of your carrier. Lufthansa: damaged baggage.

For a damage description, photos taken before packing, frame number, receipts, and an equipment list will be useful. Even after filing an airport report, further claims procedures may be necessary. Keep the packaging and do not throw away damaged parts before the inspection has been arranged. Also check the insurance conditions for your bicycle during transport. If the carbon has cracked or you suspect damage, take the bicycle to a service for assessment before riding it.

Point-to-point trips, return packaging and cleaning the bike

If you are returning from another city, decide what will happen to your first packing case. You can arrange for storage and transport, rent a bag with appropriate logistics, or arrange for a box at the service centre at the end of your trip. Do not assume that a large box will be available the evening before flying. Confirm the size, opening hours, and availability of tools.

After the last stage, allow time for cleaning, drying, and inspecting your bicycle. Mud in the drivetrain, seeds in the spokes, and wet pads make packing difficult. When entering New Zealand, used sporting and outdoor equipment must be declared; MPI emphasizes that even seemingly clean gear can pose a biosecurity risk. MPI: Declaring used equipment.

When comparing a rental bike to your own, consider the entire trip. Check the size and equipment, pedal availability, pick up location, and return conditions. For three leisurely rides, renting locally might save a lot of logistics. Your own bike might be a better choice for a long journey, if you have custom sizing needs, or before an important event, provided you have time for transport and assembly.

REAL TRAVEL SITUATIONS

What if your trip looks like this?

Choose the closest situation and work through the preparation step by step.

SCENARIO 01

A week of road riding from one base

You are taking a carbon road bike in a rented travel case.

  1. Check the cockpit fit and total weight of the entire package, then confirm the service for both directions.
  2. Arrange for a car that can accommodate the bag and for storing it at the accommodation.
  3. Pack the helmet, shoes, and kit for the first ride into the available cabin baggage.

Store the case at your accommodation so it is ready for the return flight.

SCENARIO 02

MTB 29 inch and connecting flight

A long mountain bike fits in the case, but the first leg uses a smaller aircraft.

  1. Provide the operators with the actual dimensions; fitting the bag does not confirm space on the aircraft.
  2. Check the transfer to the final airport and the baggage transfer time.
  3. Protect the drivetrain, insert the correct brake-pad spacers, and remove any detachable electronics.

Confirm acceptance for every leg, including short feeder flights.

SCENARIO 03

Gravel: starting in one city, finishing in another

You are touring for ten days with bike bags and not returning to the first hotel.

  1. Arrange for a departing box and a supplier for the correct box on return.
  2. Check the separate billing for the panniers and items allowed inside the bike packaging.
  3. Plan the final night's stay with washing, drying, and packing facilities.

Before leaving, decide where you will get a box for the flight home.

SCENARIO 04

Weekend on an e-bike

You want to take out the battery and rent a second one upon arrival.

  1. Check the ban on the entire vehicle; Lufthansa explicitly includes a bike without a battery.
  2. Book a suitable e-bike on site if your carrier does not accept your own.
  3. Take your own helmet, clothes, and any agreed accessories within the baggage allowance.

If the airline bans an e-bike without its battery, renting a battery on arrival changes nothing.

SCENARIO 05

Trip to a competition in the USA

You have two CO2 cartridges and a repair kit in your saddle bag.

  1. Remove full cartridges before packing: TSA security regulations are a separate restriction.
  2. Arrange for a pump and buy cartridges on site; also check on adhesives and aerosols.
  3. Recheck the pockets on the way back, even if the bike is packed by the service.

For travel through the USA, check TSA screening rules as well as the airline's policy.

ONE MORE QUESTION

Useful details before you fly

Can a bicycle travel as regular checked luggage?

It depends on the airline and the fare. Even if the item falls within the baggage allowance limit, it may require a separate declaration. LOT charges a fee for a bicycle regardless of the standard limit; check the confirmed service in your booking.

How much does transporting a bicycle by air cost?

There is no single price for all routes. Check the cost for both directions in the booking, and add the bag, transfer, and any excess baggage for comparison. Be aware if the payment also confirms space for the equipment.

Does the 30 or 32 kg limit include the packaging?

Plan and weigh the entire package you are dropping off: bicycle, bag, padding, and approved accessories. The weight of the bicycle itself does not describe what the staff will weigh at the counter.

Do I have to completely deflate the tyres?

Check your airline's documentation and the specific packing option. LOT recommends partial deflation, and Wizz Air describes deflating the air when packing into the box. A tubeless system requires additional planning for re-inflation and leak checking.

Can the handlebars be left on the Scicon AeroComfort?

This model is designed to take the bike with its handlebars in place. The carrier may still require them to be turned or removed, so check before choosing the case.

Will the EVOC BIKE BAG PRO fit within the LOT limit?

The version described here measures 147 × 85 × 36 cm, for a total of 268 cm. LOT publishes a standard limit of 230 cm, so agree the larger dimensions with its Contact Centre before travelling. A purpose-built bike case is still subject to the airline's size rules.

Is an e-bike without a battery allowed?

Removing the battery does not make an e-bike acceptable. Lufthansa explicitly prohibits these vehicles even without the battery, and the other airlines discussed here also prohibit e-bikes. Only rely on an exception when the airline states it in its rules.

Can CO2 cartridges be stored in the checked bicycle?

Checking in does not remove the restrictions on gases. Check the ULC conditions, the carrier's approval, and the regulations at all border controls. For the USA, full bike cartridges are problematic even in checked baggage; a hand pump simplifies preparation.

Where should I store a multi tool and pedal wrench?

Secure them in checked baggage. Check every blade and tool in the set rather than relying on its folded length. See the tool guide for details.

Is a helmet considered additional complimentary baggage?

Airlines do not automatically treat a helmet as an extra free item. Pack it within your baggage allowance and protect it from crushing. Attaching it to the outside may increase the bag's measured dimensions.

What should I do if the bag is fine, but the bicycle is damaged?

Photograph the damage and the way the bicycle was packed, report it to the carrier immediately, and note the claim deadlines. An undamaged case does not prove that every part inside is sound. If you suspect structural damage, do not ride until a bike shop has assessed it.

Can I dispose of the box upon arrival?

Yes, only plan your journey if you have confirmed packaging for return and a place to prepare it. For an onward journey, check the size of the box, the store's hours, and the availability of tape, padding, and tools.
