Digital breathalyzer on a plane: carry-on and checked baggage

Yes, you can take a digital breathalyzer on departure from Poland after checking its batteries. Spare lithium cells stay in your carry-on. Before checking the device, confirm its power specifications, switch it off completely and protect it against damage and accidental activation.

CHECK THE BATTERIES

Check the device and its batteries separately

Read your model's manual and cell labels. A breathalyzer may use replaceable batteries or a rechargeable battery. Its name and casing size do not tell you which. Note the model and photograph a readable label to show the specifications at check-in.

  • Alkaline batteries in the compartment

Poland's Civil Aviation Authority, ULC, allows dry alkaline batteries in either baggage type with the required protection. Close the compartment and shield the button from pressure. Keep spares in packaging that protects their terminals. AA and AAA describe size; read the chemistry too.

  • An installed lithium battery

ULC allows an installed lithium-ion battery up to 100 Wh in either baggage type under its carriage conditions and recommends carry-on. In the hold, the breathalyzer must be completely off and protected against damage and activation. For an unknown or higher capacity, confirm the applicable category with your airline before packing.

  • A removed or spare lithium cell

Keep it in your carry-on within the limit for its type. Protect each cell separately against short circuits, using original packaging or a case with covered terminals. Permission to check a breathalyzer with its installed battery does not cover a spare beside it.

These distinctions follow ULC rules for dry and spare batteries and conditions for devices with batteries up to 100 Wh.

Mouthpieces, cable and cleaning fluid

Pack dry mouthpieces separately, preferably in their packaging. The manual identifies detachable parts. Arrange the charging cable so its plug cannot press on the screen. Assess a power bank separately and keep it out of checked baggage.

Check cleaning fluid by its ingredients and the airport's rules. At an airport applying the 100 ml limit, carry-on bottles must not exceed 100 ml in capacity and must fit in a transparent, resealable liquids bag of up to one litre. Your Europe's luggage guide describes this rule. Check your departure airport's current conditions. Mouthpiece hygiene fluid has no automatic medicine exemption; that applies to medicine needed during the journey.

Prepare the case before closing your bag

  1. List the kit's contents, marking spare cells and fluid separately to remember them when moving the case between bags.
  2. Switch off the device. Use a fitted case, protect the screen and button, and check that accessories do not press on the casing when closed.
  3. Keep the manual on your phone. If battery markings are unreadable, ask the manufacturer before travelling and give the airline your model's specifications.
  4. Recheck the contents before checking a bag. Move spare lithium cells and the power bank to the bag you keep in the cabin.

Two ways to pack your kit

  • A weekend with a small backpack

For an alkaline model, check the compartment and put mouthpieces in a separate case pocket. Prepare any fluid for screening with your other liquids. Keep the case accessible if staff ask to see it.

  • A rechargeable model in checked baggage

Confirm the battery type and capacity first. If it meets the conditions, put the completely switched-off breathalyzer in a protective case. Keep spare lithium cells and your power bank in carry-on, including when handing a bag over at the gate.

SHORT ANSWER

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a breathalyzer with AAA batteries in my carry-on?

Yes, on departure from Poland, subject to battery conditions. AAA describes size; read the chemistry too. For alkaline batteries, protect the terminals against short circuits and the device against activation. Check spare lithium cells against the separate ULC rules.

Do I need to remove a built-in rechargeable battery?

An installed lithium-ion battery up to 100 Wh can stay under the carriage conditions. Do not dismantle the casing to remove a non-replaceable battery. For checked baggage, switch the breathalyzer off completely and protect it against damage and activation. Check your airline's requirements too.

Can a spare lithium cell travel in the same case?

Yes, in the cabin, within the relevant limits and individually protected against short circuits. A loose cell beside the breathalyzer still needs its terminals covered. If you check the case, move the spare lithium cell to your carry-on.

Do mouthpieces count towards the liquids limit?

Dry mouthpieces do not count towards liquids or go in the liquids bag. Keep them in clean, separate packaging. Assess hygiene or cleaning fluid separately; packing it with a breathalyzer gives no exemption from screening restrictions.

What if my carry-on has to go in the hold?

Remove spare lithium batteries and any power bank before handing it over. For an installed battery, check the conditions for checked baggage, complete shutdown and protection. If you cannot do this at the gate, tell staff about the device and arrange to keep it in the cabin.

Does this answer cover a return flight from another country?

The sources cover departure from Poland. For your return, check the local airport and airline rules, including batteries and liquids. Check any transfer point where you undergo screening again. Keep the model and power specifications for the whole route.
