TOY RESEMBLING A FIREARM

Cap gun on a plane: carry-on and checked baggage

For a departure from Poland, keep a realistic cap gun out of hand luggage. An empty imitation may travel in checked baggage after airline approval and subject to its conditions. Leave pyrotechnic caps behind: they cannot travel in either bag.

Carry-on baggage

Prohibited

A toy that can be mistaken for a real firearm is prohibited in the cabin. Pyrotechnic caps are also prohibited.

Checked baggage

Allowed with conditions

The empty toy requires airline approval and compliance with its conditions. Do not include pyrotechnic caps.

CHECK THE WHOLE SET

The toy and the caps need separate decisions

A cap gun bought as a souvenir may share a box with refill strips or rings. Before choosing a bag, check what the set contains. The distinction matters even if the packaging calls everything a children's toy. This page concerns an imitation and its pyrotechnic accessories at a departure from Poland.

  • Empty imitation

Ask the airline about the exact toy before including it in checked luggage. Describe it as a cap gun and provide a photo if needed. Follow the carrier's instructions for acceptance and packing.

  • Caps and refill packs

Leave pyrotechnic caps out of the journey. Check the toy's box and any refill compartment in its case. Keeping the refills separate from the toy does not make them suitable for passenger baggage.

The official ULC lists distinguish firearm-shaped toys and imitations from primers and pyrotechnic materials. Read both when checking a cap-gun set.

Decide before packing the suitcase

  1. Identify the item from its label or instructions. If it is a starter pistol or another device, check that item separately. A shop receipt saying "toy" may not explain its construction.
  2. Ask the airline whether it accepts your empty cap gun in checked baggage. Include your route and ask about any special check-in arrangements. A general baggage allowance does not answer this question.
  3. Keep caps at home. If you cannot confirm that the toy is empty, leave the whole set behind. Do not test it or attempt to alter its contents at the airport.
  4. Once the airline approves the empty toy, use the packing method it specifies. Keep its reply with your travel documents so you can show the relevant instructions at check-in.
  5. Check the return journey before bringing the souvenir abroad. Save the product description while you still have the box, particularly if you will need to ask a different airline about it.

A family holiday and a prop collection

  • A child's souvenir

Decide what will travel before a child puts the toy in their backpack. If your holiday booking includes only cabin bags, choose another souvenir. Check that replacement on its own merits, especially if it comes with batteries or liquids.

  • A costume or stage prop

Ask the organiser whether a suitable prop is available at the destination. If you plan to take your own empty imitation, get the airline's answer before committing to it. Describe every accessory in the case so approval for the toy is not treated as approval for the whole kit.

SHORT ANSWER

Frequently asked questions

Does an orange tip make a cap gun acceptable in hand luggage?

Do not use the tip colour as permission. The ULC category covers toys and imitations that can be mistaken for a real firearm. If you are uncertain about your toy, send a photo and product description to the airline before travel. Keep it out of your cabin packing plan.

Can I take one unopened packet of caps?

Leave pyrotechnic caps behind. An unopened packet, a small quantity or a child's toy set does not create an exception to the prohibition on carrying pyrotechnic material in passenger baggage.

Can the empty toy go in checked baggage?

Only after the airline accepts it and you meet its conditions. The checked-baggage answer applies to the empty imitation. Ask how to present and pack that exact item, and keep the confirmation available for check-in.

What if I travel with only a backpack?

Leave the cap gun at home or choose a different toy for the trip. Check any replacement separately. A checked-baggage option does not help when your booking has no bag to check, and caps cannot go in either bag.

Is a starter pistol covered by this answer?

Treat it as a separate item. Tell the airline exactly what you have instead of calling every pistol-shaped object a toy. A starter pistol, an air gun and an empty cap gun can have different transport requirements and accessories.

Does this English page cover flights from the USA?

It covers departures from Poland using Polish Civil Aviation Authority guidance. For a departure elsewhere, check the authority and airline responsible for that journey. Do the same for a return flight or a connection with another security check.
