FOOD FOR THE TRIP

Can you bring bread in carry-on and checked baggage?

Yes. TSA lists bread for both carry-on and checked baggage at a US checkpoint. A separate jar of jam, spread or sauce is assessed as a liquid or gel; it does not take the same answer as the loaf.

Carry-on baggage

Allowed

Bread and plain rolls: yes. A separate liquid or gel topping follows the carry-on liquids rule.

Checked baggage

Allowed

Bread and plain rolls: yes. Protect them from crushing and check destination food import rules for international travel.

What needs a separate check?

A loaf and a jar of spread do not have the same form at screening. Identify what you have packed as separate items.

Loaf and plain rolls

These are solid food. Wrap them to contain crumbs and put them where heavier items will not crush them.

Jam or spread in a jar

This is a separate liquid or gel. The carry-on container is limited to 3.4 fl oz / 100 ml.

BEFORE LEAVING HOME

Keep the loaf in shape

  1. Wrap a loaf or rolls so crumbs stay contained, then place them where heavier items will not crush them.
  2. Treat a jar of jam, spread or sauce as a separate item. If it is a liquid or gel, TSA limits the carry-on container to 3.4 fl oz / 100 ml.
  3. On an international trip, check destination food import rules separately from TSA screening.
