OPTICAL EQUIPMENT
Can you bring binoculars on a plane?
TSA allows binoculars in carry-on and checked baggage. For a model with electronic stabilization, follow FAA rules for its installed battery and keep spare lithium cells in carry-on.

Carry-on baggage
Allowed
TSA allows binoculars in carry-on. Cap both lenses and protect any spare lithium battery terminals.
Checked baggage
Allowed
TSA allows binoculars in checked baggage. Cushion the optics; fully power off a model with an installed lithium battery.
Passive optics and powered stabilization
Protect lenses and focus wheels from compression. A passive pair has no battery decision; a powered pair should be switched off before checking.
BEFORE LEAVING HOME
Pack the optics
- Cap lenses and support the focus wheel.
- Identify whether stabilization uses a battery.
- Keep loose lithium spares in carry-on with protected terminals.
Example: Canon 10×30 IS II
The Canon 10×30 IS II has image stabilization powered by two AA alkaline or NiMH batteries. It does not use a lithium battery pack, so there is no lithium watt-hour rating to find for this model. Leave the batteries installed or protect loose cells against short circuits, and cushion the binoculars in their case. Ordinary binoculars without stabilization may have no battery at all.
