TRAVEL WITH A CHILD

Can you bring a baby carrier on a plane?

TSA permits baby carriers in carry-on and checked baggage at US checkpoints. A folded soft carrier may be easy to bring through screening; a rigid backpack carrier must also meet the airline’s cabin size allowance.

Carry-on baggage

Allowed with conditions

Bring the carrier through screening with pockets emptied. Ask the airline whether a framed model fits in the cabin before relying on carry-on space.

Checked baggage

Allowed

A soft or framed baby carrier may be checked. Clip straps together and pad any exposed frame ends so they cannot catch on other luggage.

Security permission and airline cabin space are separate checks.

Soft carrier, frame and cabin size

The carrier itself is not the same item as a child car seat or stroller. Empty its pockets before screening and secure hanging straps. A large frame can be accepted through security yet still be too large for the airline cabin.

  1. Soft fabric carrier

Fold and keep straps contained for screening.

  2. Rigid-frame backpack

Confirm closed dimensions with the airline.

  3. Carrier accessories

Assess bottles or powered add-ons separately.

BEFORE LEAVING HOME

Prepare the carrier

  1. Remove loose items from every pocket.
  2. Fold the fabric or protect frame ends.
  3. Check cabin dimensions for a framed model.
