AEROSOL INSECTICIDES

Can you bring aerosol insecticide on a plane?

TSA does not allow aerosol insecticide in carry-on on US flights. It may travel in checked baggage only if it is not labeled as hazardous material; FAA excludes sprays aimed at air or insects from the skin-repellent toiletry exception.

Carry-on baggage

Prohibited

Do not bring aerosol insecticide through a TSA checkpoint. A small can does not convert room insecticide into skin repellent.

Checked baggage

Allowed with conditions

TSA conditionally permits aerosol insecticide in checked baggage when it is not labeled HAZMAT. A flammable or otherwise regulated can has no ordinary passenger exception; protect an accepted nozzle against release.

TSA’s checked condition does not extend to HAZMAT insecticides.

Room spray versus skin repellent

Read the exact label and safety data sheet. Flammable or toxic aerosol insecticide does not gain permission from the checked-bag entry. A repellent applied to skin or clothing is a different product with its own limited toiletry allowance.

  1. Room insecticide aerosol

No carry-on; checked only if not HAZMAT.

  2. Flammable or toxic can

Do not pack in either bag.

  3. Skin repellent

Different product under the toiletry exception.

BEFORE LEAVING HOME

Read the use and hazard labels

  1. Check whether the spray targets air/insects or skin/clothing.
  2. Look for flammable, toxic or HAZMAT markings.
  3. Only a qualifying checked can gets a protected cap.
